lonely day

Day 5

I just feel really lonely this morning.

I have Lop, and Marion's mom and dad are nice. It's neat to spend whole days with Marion, and the police are nice. And Mom was starting to get pretty scary last year.

But I still miss Mom. That's all.

meeting janet again

Day 4

Remember yesterday my Mom screamed at us in the store? After we got back to the house, Marion's mom called the police, and they sent some policemen over to stay with us for a couple of days.

Really! At night there is a policeman sitting in the living room, drinking coffee. During the day, the policewoman I met last year will be with Marion and me. I found out her name is Janet, and she will also go with us to the courthouse.

The bad news is, it's harder now to find time to get on the computer.

Then there's the really bad news. I have to go to court to see if Marion's mom will become my foster mom. I am scared about this, because what if they say no? I can't go home to live with my Mom, Janet told me.

I won't know until next week.

first monday

Day 3

Mom saw me this morning with Marion and her mom at the store, and came over to shout at Marion's mom. It was really embarrassing; she was dressed except for her shoes. She just had her fuzzy slippers on.

Marion's mom got more quiet the louder Mom shouted, except I noticed her grip on the handle of the shopping cart was very tight. We just stood in the bread aisle while Mom screamed and her face got red. Then Marion's mom said, "Are you through?" It was almost a whisper.

I stayed behind Marion and her mom, you better believe it!

The mall security guys came in, and Mom left before they got to us. I was shaking pretty hard, but Marion's mom was amazing—she went up to the check-out and got the groceries paid for, then we went out to the car.

It was funny, though. We sat in the car for almost 20 minutes before she started the engine. She would put her hands on the steering wheel, then shake her head and drop them in her lap again.

I guess she was shaken up after all.

off to church

Day 2

I went to church this morning with Marion and her parents. It felt really weird to be there. I tried to explain to Marion's mom last night that we are atheists, but she just said, "Not while you live in our house, dear."

Marion said it would be fun to go, because we would meet some of the other kids from school afterward.

It surprised me because it wasn't anything like when I went to the choir concert with Jack. First, their church is really quiet, and they barely sing at all, except once in a while they sing just one line. There were lots of people there.

Second, there was almost no sermon. Mom used to tell me that church was sitting for hours, listening to a guy drone on and on about hell and sinning. (Actually, I thought that might be kind of interesting.) But there was none of that in this service.

Maybe she was thinking of a different church.

new beginning

Day 1

We all slept late this morning, except Lop. Marion's mom and dad took her to a party last night, so they were up late to see in the new year. Marion is still sort of asleep.

I dreamed about Granpa last night. It was a good dream, he was talking to me face to face. I never met him, really, so I've been trying real hard to remember what his face looked like in the dream. It's funny, though, I just keep thinking of Dad's face and the President's face.

Lop woke me up this morning chasing the edge of my blanket where it hangs down off the fold-away bed. Then Lop climbed up the end of the bed and bounced on my feet for a while, and made it hard to remember my dream.

Eventually, I gave up and got up to feed the kitty.
